Filo – Mirror and steel pieces, Amsterdam 2026

Body of small-scale works exploring memory, nostalgia, identity and fragility, presented alongside Sabrina Olvera’s Kiss and Cry collection launch. The works draw on a shared history of ice skating as a formative experience, using texture and material to speak about the turns life takes, the scars it leaves, and what remains.

Maria creates depictions of the fragility of memory.  Like a landscape shaped by layers of earth, eroded over time and given new shape; where figures emerge or are buried with the shifting layers; her work explores the fragile state of memory - it’s susceptibility to decay, and the layering of impressions and time that continually merge into an uncertain whole, a delicate identity, something new … but only for now.

Material is central to her work. Through natural and found substances, clay, volcanic rock, wax, pigment, cement, mirrors she searches for the ways light moves across surfaces, the way matter holds time. Compositions are never fully finished: simultaneously being buried and excavated, their meaning shifting with the eye of the beholder. The work exists at a threshold between personal and collective, between erosion and accumulation, between what is remembered and what is lost.

As a self-taught artist, her practice has been built entirely from within: shaped by lived experience, material curiosity, and an instinct for the poetic rather than the academic. Nothing was taught to her; everything in it is found.
